Registered Nurse - Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS)
Michigan State University's Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) seeks a full time registered nurse to participate in an integrated mental health system that supports collaboration with other mental health professionals and health service clinicians.
This is an especially exciting time to join our staff. In August 2017, MSU’s Counseling Center officially joined with the Psychiatry unit from our Student Health Services to become Counseling and Psychiatric Services .  CAPS moved into a larger, newly renovated space on the third floor of Student Health Services building, where our offices now overlook beautiful brick buildings and tall, mature trees. As part of our expansion, CAPS has been allocated additional resources to recruit and hire a number of new mental health clinicians, and we have opened up a satellite location within our student union during the Fall of 2018.

CAPS provides a wide range of mental health services for students on campus, including and not limited to: screening/triage, appointments, individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, outreach and multicultural engagement, clinical care coordination, intensive integrated clinical services, and hospitalization coordination and support.

The nurse working within CAPS will be responsible for providing direct, independent, specialized care, counseling, and instruction to patients seeking mental health services, be a liaison within the MSU system as well as the community and provide mentorship to medical assistants
This position requires:
  • knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in Nursing;
  • one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in Nursing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The position also requires possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan and BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
This position will serve as CAPS primary liaison to MSU’s Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD). This will include a working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as playing a principle role in conducting and coordinating functional impairment assessments both as a direct service with students as well as in consultation with other CAPS providers and our medical record systems in order to complete RCPD paperwork to assist students. Thus, background, experience, interest and passion in assisting students with disabilities including psychiatric disabilities is highly preferred.

Additional desired qualifications include:
  • experience in coordinating total patient care in order to maintain efficient psychiatry clinic operations by coordinating and monitoring the care of patients diagnosed with mental health concerns including suicide attempts, depression, eating disorders and anxiety;
  • experience in resolving psychiatric crisis situations under the direction of licensed mental health professionals and providing support and assistance to patients with problems coordinating or arranging for the provision of needed services including emergency hospitalizations; experience working in an in-patient psychiatric unit or outpatient multidisciplinary mental health office;
  • and superior written and verbal communication skills.
As part of MSU, we offer an excellent benefit package including medical benefits and contribution to retiree accounts.
