General Responsibilities:

The Associate Vice President of Nursing fulfills a key leadership role in the development and advancement of excellence in primary care nursing at Thundermist. This leader will recruit develop and mentor nurse leaders within Thundermist and support their work as they develop staff in clinical support roles. The AVP of Nursing will ensure appropriate organization-wide training of nursing and medical assistant staff, working to establish uniformity of nursing services and further develop the role of nursing across all Thundermist locations.

Required Qualifications:
  • Current State of Rhode Island license (RN, or APRN)
  • Advance nursing degree (Masters/ PhD)
  • Graduate education in Health Care Administration preferred
  • 3-5 years of management experience in Ambulatory Health Care strongly desired
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with patients, providers, other members of the health care team, other disciplines and community agencies

Physical Effort/Environment:
Most work performed in a general office environment with no extreme physical demands. Transportation needed for frequent external meetings.  Role requires moderate physical activity; walking, standing, stooping, occasional lifting.  Clinical environment includes potential exposure to blood borne pathogens, other infectious diseases and bio-hazardous material.

Work Schedule Demands:
Full time (40 hours, plus) five days per week. Work schedule will vary with some evening and weekend obligations.
 
Communication Skills:
Exceptional oral and written skills required. Proficient in health management terminology, including information and billing systems terminology, contractual language, tort language, medical terminology, financial terminology, along with federal and state public health program terminology.
 
Confidentiality of Information:
This position involves access to agency strategic and financial information, as well as access to patient records. Adherence to Thundermist policy, as well as state and federal regulations concerning privacy is required.

Significant Job Functions:

Leadership for Nursing Function at Thundermist
  • Provide leadership and supervision of nursing staff and medical assistant staff for all Thundermist clinical departments
  • Recruit, develop and mentor the nurse leadership team within THC and support the work of recruiting, developing, and mentoring staff primary care nurses and medical assistants.
  • Ensure appropriate organization-wide training of nursing and medical assistant staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all THC policies and regulatory agency standards to promote and maintain quality patient care, including but not limited to HRSA, OSHA/EOC, Safety/Infection Control, Quality Care Audits, and DPH licensure requirements.  This work is done in conjunction with the Risk and Compliance Department and the Health Informatics Team. Specifically, the AVP of Nursing will oversee:
    • Medication management
    • Provision of care, treatment, and services with CMO
  • Monitor teams for consistency with huddles to ensure compliance with planned care such as cancer screening, vaccinations, lab tests, etc.
  • Work with Human Resources to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with THC policies and applicable laws, including such activities as: developing nurse managers and supervisors in effective handling of employee relations issues; interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Develop and implement organization-wide patient education programs and materials in conjunction with other Thundermist Medical staff.
  • Work to establish uniformity of nursing services and nursing excellence across  Thundermist locations
  • Work with CMO and Medical Directors to develop standing orders and nurse-led visits to advance the agency goals of productivity, efficiency, and excellence.
  • Regularly assess and monitor, or ensure that such monitoring is undertaken, of nurse visit documentation to meet compliance with requirements and regulations for billing and for nursing practice.
  • Work with CMO, Medical Director and the Risk and Compliance Departments to establish and maintain a sustainable care coordination program that meets agency, PCMH, and HRSA objectives.
  • Oversee nursing services in Thundermist’s School Based Health Program.
  • Oversee Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee
  • Support the work and objectives of Environment of Care and Quality Improvement Committee
  • Develop, present, or support others on nursing team in nursing presentations for CEUs
Leadership for Strategic Growth
  • Collaborate with other clinical leaders and in developing and promoting a model of inter-professional collaboration and in setting and reaching collaborative clinical goals.
  • In collaboration with Medical Directors, CMO, and COO, support increased nursing productivity through creative re-design of the pod unit and nursing services.
  • Develop nurse-led quality and performance improvement program based on the AHQR and Johns Hopkins Model, to meet the needs of nurse inquiry, patient safety, and health care excellence.
Leadership for Nursing Profession
  • Develop accredited CEU program for Thundermist nursing staff.
  • Serve as liaison with nursing schools, attend recruiting events, and provide speaker services in nursing schools to promote the recruitment of nurses in primary care.
