UT Health San Antonio invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Nursing (SON).

The next Dean will join a vibrant and dynamic healthcare environment that offers unparalleled opportunities for innovative teaching, clinical practice, collaborative research, and service in a thriving, ethnically diverse, major urban region.

Since its founding in 1969, the UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing has been at the forefront of academic nursing. US News & World Report recently ranked the program 3rd for undergraduate nursing programs in Texas and 43rd out of 694 programs nationally, making the School the largest and highest-ranked school of nursing in the South Texas region.

The School operates 13 clinical sites and a mobile clinic to provide care, with a particular focus on vulnerable communities in the region. The School’s practice has had over 146,000 patient visits in 2021. The School’s research portfolio continues to grow, reaching approximately $17.5 million in FY21.

Reporting to the President, the Dean of the School of Nursing will advance the School’s excellence in and alignment between education, research and scholarship, practice, and service. The Dean will:
  • oversee the creation and execution of a strategic plan;
  • recruit, empower, and integrate a talented group of faculty and staff;
  • promote strong faculty governance;
  • increase research productivity and funding;
  • ensure an excellent student experience; and
  • nurture vital internal and external relationships.
The Dean will have a keen understanding of the changing healthcare environment and how to prepare the next generation of nurse leaders, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, and interprofessional healthcare education and delivery.

To fulfill accreditation requirements, the Dean must be a registered nurse (RN) with a graduate degree in nursing and hold a doctoral degree.

The Dean must also have a current or eligible RN licensure to practice nursing in the state of Texas.

Significant experience in nursing leadership, education, practice, and research and scholarship is expected.
