MENOPAUSE: Studies report a link between the long-term use of estrogen by postmenopausal women and a significantly increased risk of cancer of the endometrium. The risk of cancer has been found to be considerably greater for women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) than for those who are not. However, there are cardiovascular benefits associated with HRT.

The on-set of menopause happens in the age range of 45-55.

Loss of estrogen results in increased risk for osteoporosis, the loss of bone density. Osteoporosis occurs later in life for African American women than for White women.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading causes of death among African American women, caused generally by high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Studies are needed to address the issue of cardiovascular and HRT and African American women.

Studies are needed to address the issue of African American women who are at risk for breast cancer because of their ethnic and genetic background as it relates to HRT.
