NBNA Honors
Scholars at 31st Annual Conference

The National Black Nurses
Association, Inc. is pleased to announce this year's honorees
for the NBNA Nursing Awards at the 31st Annual Institute
and Conference of the National Black Nurses Association,
July 30 - August 3, 2003, at the New Orleans Marriott. The
students will receive the scholarships at the Awards Ceremony
on Friday, August 1, 2003. The theme of the Conference is
"Emerging Health Threats: Nursing Solutions in a New
Era".
Jacinta C. Anuna
will receive the NBNA Board of Directors Scholarship. Jacinta
is attending Texas Woman's University, School of Nursing
in Houston, TX and is a member of the NBNA of Greater Houston.
Stacy D. Michel and Tiffany
M. Montgomery will receive the Mayo Clinic Foundation Scholarship.
Stacy is attending the School of Nursing at Jacksonville
University, Jacksonville, FL and is a member of the First
Coastal Black Nurses Association. Tiffany is a student at
San Jose State University, School of Nursing, San Jose,
CA and a member of the South Bay Black Nurses Association.
This scholarship is supported by the Mayo Clinic Foundation
to recognize a student nurse or a licensed nurse who is
seeking a baccalaureate or advance degree.
The Aetna Scholarship
Awardee is Nena R. Harris. Nena is a student at the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Nursing
in Chapel Hill, NC. Nena is a member of the Central Carolina
Black Nurses Association.
The Dr. Lauranne Sams
Scholarship goes to Ashlee A. King and Amber D. Rice.
Ashlee is a member of the Cincinnati Black Nurses Association
and is attending Grambling State University, School of Nursing
in Grambling, LA. Amber is a member of the Bay Area Black
Nurses Association and is attending the University of San
Francisco, School of Nursing. The Dr. Lauranne Sams Scholarship
is awarded to a student nurse based on scholastic achievement,
financial need and community service. The scholarship, which
is named for the Founder and First President of the NBNA,
has a proud and distinguished legacy. The recipient must
be an individual who truly represents the leadership, the
commitment to service and scholarship of Dr. Sams.
The Kaiser Permanente
Scholarship is being awarded to Iman O. Ashaka, a nursing
student at Hampton University, School of Nursing in Hampton,
VA. Iman is a member of the Greater Washington, DC Area
Black Nurses Association.
Alexandra Jean-Charles
is the recipient of the Nursing Spectrum Scholarship.
Alexandra is attending Barry University, School of Nursing
in Miami Shores, Florida. She is a member of the Miami Black
Nurses Association
The Martha R. Dudley
LVN Scholarship will be presented to Michelle Bartley,
a student at South Georgia College, School of Nursing in
Savannah, GA. Michelle is a member of the Savannah Black
Nurses Association. This scholarship is given by Maria Dudley,
past president of the Council of Black Nurses, Los Angeles,
in honor of her mother Martha R. Dudley, and LPN and a member
of the NBNA of Greater Houston.
The $2000.00 NCEMNA/Aetna
Scholars Award will be presented to
Jamise C. Herbert a recent graduate of Hampton University
School of Nursing and a graduate student who will be attending
the School of Nursing
University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Jamise
is a member of the Cleveland Council of Black Nurses Association.
Rochelle Jeannette Poindexter Youth Service Award
The Family of Rochelle Jeannette
Poindexter is proud to establish a Youth Service Award in
memory of Rochelle. The award goes to an NBNA Chapter with
a major initiative involving community youth. The $500.00
Award will be given to Metroplex Black Nurses Association,
Dallas, TX.
The National Black Nurses
Association, founded in 1971, is a professional organization,
representing 150,000 African American registered nurses,
licensed vocational/practical nurses and nursing students.
The mission of NBNA is to "investigate, define and
determine the health care requirements of African Americans
and other diverse communities to foster optimal health and
health care services commensurate with that of the larger
society."
