NBNA Honors
Dr. Ora Strickland with Trailblazer Award

Dr. Ora L. Strickland
will be honored with the NBNA Trailblazer Award at the 31st
Annual Institute and Conference of the National Black Nurses
Association, July 30 - August 3, 2003, at the New Orleans
Marriott. The awardees will receive the honor at the President's
Gala on Saturday, August 2, 2003. The theme of the Conference
is "Emerging Health Threats: Nursing Solutions in a
New Era".
Ora Strickland, PhD, DSc
(Hon.), RN, FAAN is Professor in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff
School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia
and is also Director of Research on Special Populations
of Veterans at the Atlanta Veterans Administration Medical
Center. Dr. Strickland is the founding editor of the Journal
of Nursing Measurement. She has also served on numerous
editorial boards or review panels, among them are Advances
in Nursing Science, Research in Nursing and Health, Journal
of Profession Nursing, Scholarly Inquiry for Nursing Practice:
An International Journal and the Nursing Leadership Forum.
Dr. Strickland also initiated the development of the Nursing
Citation Index.
In recognition of Dr. Strickland's
outstanding contributions to nursing, she is the youngest
person ever elected into the American Academy of Nursing.
Other fellowships include the Kellogg National Fellow, Endowment
for the Humanities Fellow in Bioethics, American Nurses'
Association Minority Doctoral Fellow and Ford Foundation
Fellow. She has been a member of the Advisory Committee
to the Director of the National Institutes of Health, National
Center for Nursing Research National Advisory Council, Chairperson
of the Board of Directors of the American Journal of Nursing
Company, and member the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus
Health Brain Trust. While a professor at the University
of Maryland at Baltimore, Dr. Strickland was a columnist
for the Baltimore Sun. Her column tilted "Nurse's
Station" appeared regularly in the health magazine
section of the Morning and Evening Sun and won two health
journalism awards in 1988. Four volumes of Measurements
of Nursing Outcomes has won seven American Journal
of Nursing Book of the Year Awards.
An internationally known
specialist in nursing research, measurement, evaluation
and maternal and child health and parenting, Dr. Strickland
is frequently called upon as a consultant. She has presented
more than 200 lectures, speeches and workshops. She has
appeared on national television shows including NBC's Frank
Field Show, Straight Talk, and ABC's Nightly News with Peter
Jennings. Dr. Strickland has written or contributed to over
18 books.
The National Black Nurses
Association, founded in 1971, is a professional organization,
representing 150,000 African American registered nurses,
licensed vocational/practical nurses and nursing students.
The mission of NBNA is to "investigate, define and
determine the health care requirements of African Americans
and other diverse communities to foster optimal health and
health care services commensurate with that of the larger
society."
